A brief history of the Australian Alpine Club

The Australian Alpine Club or AAC was founded in 1950 by Charles Anton. At the time, it was known as the Ski Tourers’ Association. A number of lodges were opened across Australian ski fields throughout the 1950s to 1980s. Since its humble beginnings, the AAC has expanded, and currently has lodges at Perisher, Falls Creek, Mount Hotham (Anton Huette), Dinner Plain, and of course, Niseko, Japan. In addition to managing ski lodges, the Australian Alpine Club also organises inter-club races throughout the winter season.

How AAC Niseko was founded

AAC Niseko was first established as a legal entity in 2005, with the lodge acquired in 2007. We’ve been helping people book their Niseko ski accommodation for almost 20 years and are happy to be able to provide a home away from home for those that love skiing. AAC Niseko is run by a committee of members, chosen by members, who wish to progress the Niseko ski lodge forward.

Where is AAC Niseko located?

The AAC Niseko ski resort is located in the Hirafu Izumikyo 2 area of Niseko. This makes the lodge a less than 15-minute walk into the Niseko town centre. The Hirafu Izumikyo 2 is great for nearby lunch and dinner options, plus the shuttle bus stop 22 is close by for easy commuting to the ski fields without a car.

Who can join AAC Niseko ski lodge?

AAC Niseko membership is open to anyone of good character with an interest in snowsports and the chilled-out ambience of an alpine lodge environment. While we’re called the “Australian” Alpine Club, you don’t need to be an Australian resident or citizen to be a member (although, most of our members are). If you’re interested in becoming an AAC Niseko member, fill out the form to contact our Membership Officer and chat about membership options.

How do booking priorities work at AAC Niseko?

Priority of booking at the AAC Niseko lodge goes to AAC Niseko members. As such, AAC Niseko members have the earliest booking periods, before Niseko ski accommodation bookings open to AAC members of other lodges. After these priority booking periods have ended, any remaining vacancies can be filled by commercial guests (the general public). To simplify, booking priorities are as follows:

  1. AAC Niseko members and their guests
  2. Reciprocal AAC members
  3. Commercial guests
